Nasıl kazandıkları, nasıl mağlup edilmedikleri, kim oldukları ve sokağın diğer tarafında kimin olduğu, beraberlerinde hangi sırları götürdükleri bu filmde anlatılıyor. Konu “büyük bir savaşın arka planında gelişen bir dramatik bir aşk hikayesininden” uyarlanmış. Olay 1942 yılında Alman birliklerinin Volga Nehri kıyısını işgal ettiği dönemde geçiyor. Volga’yı geçerken ve Alman ordusuna karşı saldırı başlatırken başarısızlığa uğrayan Sovyet birlikleri geri çekilmek zorunda kalır. Ancak birkaç asker düşmanın bulunduğu kıyıya ulaşmayı başarır. Azınlıktadırlar ve bu nedenle bir evde saklanırlar. Orada bir kızla tanışırlar. Almanlar bu kızın evini de işgal etmişlerdir. Bu nedenle cephe hattından ayrılma fırsatı olmamıştır. İnsanlık tarihindeki en kanlı savaşın arka planında bir aşk hikayesi doğar ve o andan itibaren askerler ne olursa olsun bu kızı korumaya söz verirler
