Masking is an essential feature of any texturing workflow, and we're excited to introduce a new, highly flexible take on masking. Masking in Mixer enables you to truly customize the mixing of your layers - both through painting and image-based masking - and combining the two workflows in a fully non-destructive way. We've added two types of masks: Paint masks and Image-based masks
Hand-paint masks on any layer type (surfaces, decals, and solids) and truly sculpt the transition of your layers. Fully leverage Mixer's brush system, including importing your own custom brushes for masking.
Create and load a custom image mask to further dictate the blending of your layers, in addition to your hand painted mask. Image masks can both be linked to the transform and tiling of the material itself, as well as have its own transform and tiling settings by simply unlinking it. The combination of Paint and Image-based masks enables you to radically customize and fine-tune the look and feel of your Mixes.
In addition to the blending modes From Above and From Below, you can now leverage the new Opacity Blend Mode, allowing you to blend a layer based on its opacity instead of its displacement information.
Along with a ton of bug fixes and performance improvements, a range of small but actively requested features have also been added to Mixer.
Quixel Mixer lets you make your own materials in a completely non-destructive workflow. Tile automatically and paint in any layer using the multi-channel layer setup. And easy exporting allows you to composite maps in any way you want.
Mixer is 100% Megascans-integrated, meaning you can browse the entire online Megascans Library straight from the app, and even import your own custom assets.
Formerly known as Megascans Studio, Mixer has been available from the Megascans website as a series of early access builds since last November's 'Megascans 2018' update. Described by Quixel CEO Teddy Bergsman as "one of those tools I've personally wanted for the longest time", it is intended as an intuitive way to blend real-world material scan data. The software is specifically designed to work with Megascans - you can access the library directly from within the software - but should work with scan data from any source.
The workflow is layer-based and fully non-destructive, with each new scan being imported onto its own layer, then adjusted through a combination of slider controls and numeric parameters. As well as blending in new scan data, it's possible to paint in details directly, including the option to paint on multiple texture channels at once, and paint in 3D details via the displacement map. Mixer can then use the height data to mimic the effect of surface water collecting on the terrain, in a similar way to the photogrammetry filters Allegorithmic introduced in Substance Designer 5.6. Texture maps generated by Mixer are 32-bit, PBR-ready and tile automatically. They can be exported in a range of common formats, with preset resolutions ranging up to 8,192 x 8,192px. Mixer also enables users to specify exactly which maps are exported, and how they are composited.
