VA - Aliens, Psychos & Wild Things Volume Fore (2007)

The fourth volume in Arcania International's no-stone-left-unturned survey of garage and psych bands working out of Virginia in the mid- to late '60s, this installment (labeled Volume Fore) actually includes bands from outside the Tidewater region, but it makes no difference, really, since all of these tracks have the same sort of loose, fuzzy feel to them. Nothing here came close to being a hit, and half a dozen or so of these cuts never even made it to 45, being drawn instead from studio tapes and rough acetates. No matter, garage bands were formed for the sheer joy and doing of it, and if the music that resulted was often pretty awful and amateur, there's a certain wild weed charm to it as well. Among the more interesting tracks here are Prince Albert's simple but oddly effective "The Wind Blows Your Hair," Group Therapy's delicate "Ronnie, Ronnie," and the Psychedelic Psymphony's sloppy but energetic instrumental "Mad Mod Speed Ball."
